On September 12, 2016 I'll be returning to Chicago Photography Classes once more to teach a 7 week intensive workshop on black and white photography. This is a comprehensive course that will change the way you think about your work. I will guide you through the entire process of creating fine art black and white photographs. We will dig down into some of my award winning images and you will see exactly how they were made. Then you'll learn my step-by-step process and you will use it to create some of your own work. You will shoot, edit, and print your own photographs using the approach and techniques covered in class. Topics covered include:

  • a comprehensive look at artistic vision
  • approach and composition in the field
  • controlling light in post production
  • masking and selections in Photoshop
  • controlling the viewer's eye
  • fine art printing

Out of Chicago Summer Conference

This is the biggest photography event of the summer! What's so great about it? There will be:

I'm really honored to be a part of this workshop for the first time. I'll be speaking and teaching a day long workshop on Black and White Artistry. I'll cover all of the aspects of fine art architectural photography; from vision to completion. I'm also leading a couple of photowalks and doing some one-on-one sessions where you can decide how we spend our time. We can talk, shoot, or do a portfolio review.

On April 9-10, 2016 I'll be at Chicago Photography Classes to teach a two day Architectural Photography Workshop. On the first day we'll meet in downtown Chicago for a tour of some of my favorite photographic sites. You'll learn to see these places in a new way. On day two we'll meet at the CPC labs to explore processing methods that will bring your vision to life. You’ll learn how to prepare a RAW file for processing, how to create light where none existed before, and how to direct the viewer’s eye according to your vision. You’ll take your photograph from a RAW file to completion. This workshop will fill up quickly so don't wait!

Live music will fill the streets of Evanston for more fun! Headlining 7PM on Friday night will be Sixteen Candles, one of Chicago’s best 80’s cover band! “Dance like an Egyptian” to all your favorite 80’s songs. The brand-new festival will feature original high-end work from 130 artists will be available for purchase, perfect for gifts or a signature addition to a personal collection. The West Loop, named one of the hottest emerging neighborhoods in the World’s Greatest Cities, officially announces the inaugural West Loop Art Fest this August 22 and 23 on Washington Blvd. . The West Loop is the epicenter for Chicago’s internationally acclaimed restaurants and is a hub for fashion and the arts. Chicago’s world famous Hubbard Street Dance Theater and Soho House both call the neighborhood home as well. The West Loop is a hip urban environment with an art loving population. The West Loop Art Fest will live on four blocks of Washington Blvd , from  Halsted on the east to Morgan on the West. A music stage and food will anchor the festival on the east end.The Festival is held in cooperation with the West Loop Community Organization  and is a joint venture of Amdur Productions and Star Events, each providing their expertise in Art and Music.

Festival entry is a suggested donation to the West Loop Community Organization, where residents, visitors, and businesses have an active voice in decisions affecting the neighborhood parks, development, schools, traffic, safety and more. Before summer ends, savor the season with a weekend of family fun and artistic exploration at the Glen.

Rated as one of the top forty shows in the country, this prestigious outdoor festival showcases original works from more than 185 juried artists. The Southport Art Festival features live entertainment, great food, artisans, and interactive activities for all. Come out and enjoy a GREAT summer weekend!

The Southport Art Festival gives attendees a delicious, eclectic mixture of the culinary, visual, and performing arts. This two-day community festival is located at 3700 N. Southport at Waveland near Wrigley Field home of the Chicago Cubs. Southport is one of the city’s mecca shopping/nightlife districts and includes beautifully maintained tree-lined streets, with rows of lovely houses in all manner of architectural styles. Local artisans will showcase their wares and local restaurants and eateries will offer your favorite summer food.

Our Sunday Gospel Brunch will provide an early morning opportunity to join us in this celebration of community. The Southport Art Festival has always featured Chicago’s favorite entertainers, including Ralph Covert, Edwin McCain, Justin Roberts and many more. This festival always offers an exciting array of live music on our main stages and lots of other interactive activities and entertainment opportunities.

Known for its unique and independent boutiques, this neighborhood is one of Chicago’s premier shopping attractions. Visit Uncommon Ground, a locally owned coffee shop featuring local musicians, or catch a movie at Southport’s Music Box Theatre, a neighborhood staple since 1929, showing foreign, art house and classic films. The Lakeview/Southport corridor neighborhood offers many options for dining, drinking, shopping, and theater as well as baseball at the historic Wrigley Field.

The Southport Art Festival benefits the Southport Neighbors Association. Since 1988, Southport Neighbors Association (SNA) has been representing the residents and businesses of the unique and vibrant neighborhood, in the heart of Lakeview. Admission is a $5 suggested donation.

Got The Shot Club Skyline Shoot at Adler Planetarium

We'll meet at the west side of the Planetarium at 7PM to get some shots of the beautiful city skyline. There's plenty of room for tripods. This is a popular photography spot and I'm sure you've seen many shots taken from here. There's also a great view of Navy Pier across the water. If you need help with night photography, I'll be available to give you a hand. Bring a tripod!

Located on the main drive of Buffalo Grove Town Center, this exceedingly popular festival offers fine art of all mediums. The Art Center (TAC) – Highland Park for the Festival of Fine Arts! Situated on the beautiful tree-lined streets surrounding TAC, the revamped festival will showcase original works from 120 juried artists. Exceptional examples of fine arts and fine craft, including ceramics, fiber, glass, jewelry, wood and more will be featured at the festival.

The Art Center’s Festival of Fine Arts will offer activities for children and families, as well as live entertainment and tasty festival treats throughout the weekend. Got The Shot Club at Buckingham Fountain

Let's meet at Buckingham Fountain for some beautiful night shots of the Fountain. I scouted this location last week and got some great shots. For those of you that need help with night photography, I will be available to help you. A tripod is essential for this outing. The exposure times are too long for handheld shots. This one will be fun! Don't be afraid to come out if you've never done night photography before. We'll also find a place for a post meetup get together. See you there!
